Hello, AI! What is artificial intelligence? — AI Explorers

Jambo, explorer! Welcome to your first AI adventure. 🚀

Have you ever asked a phone a question and it answered you? Or seen YouTube suggest a video you really liked? That was AI.

What does AI mean?

AI stands for artificial intelligence.

Artificial means made by people, not by nature.
Intelligence means being able to learn, think and solve problems.

So AI means computers that people have taught to do smart things, like recognising faces, understanding voices, or answering questions.

Is AI a robot?

Sometimes! A robot is a machine with a body that can move. Some robots use AI to see and decide where to go. But most AI has no body at all. It lives inside phones, computers and apps.

Think of it like this: a robot is like a body, and AI is like a brain. Some robots have an AI brain. Lots of AI brains have no robot body.

AI is not magic, and it's not alive

AI can seem very clever, but it doesn't have feelings, it doesn't get tired, and it doesn't really understand things the way you do. It has learned patterns from lots and lots of examples. You'll find out how in the next lesson.

Where have you met AI?

📱 A phone that unlocks when it sees your face
🗣️ Asking a phone "What's the weather in Mombasa?"
🎬 Videos and songs that an app suggests for you
🗺️ Maps that find the fastest way home and avoid traffic jams
📷 A camera app that finds faces in a photo

Activity: AI or not AI? With a grown-up, look around your home. Find 5 machines or apps. For each one, ask: "Does it just follow buttons, or does it seem to learn and make smart choices?" Draw each one and write AI or Not AI next to it. (A torch is not AI. A phone that recognises your voice uses AI!)
