About this course

AI Explorers is a gentle, hands-on introduction to artificial intelligence for children aged 8 to 11. Each lesson is short, uses simple words and familiar Kenyan examples, and ends with an activity your child can do at home.

Children learn what AI is, discover how computers learn from examples by playing a sorting game, and then train their very own AI model to recognise hand gestures using a free tool in the web browser. They explore how AI helps farmers, doctors and families, and learn clear rules for staying safe and kind when using technology.

The course finishes with a creative project: designing an AI helper for their school, home or community. A grown-up should sit with younger children, especially for lesson 3.

By the end you will be able to

  • Explain what AI is in their own words
  • Understand that computers learn from examples, just like people practise
  • Train a simple AI model that recognises pictures from a camera
  • Spot AI in everyday life at home, at school and in Kenya
  • Follow safety rules: protect personal information and ask a grown-up
  • Know that AI can make mistakes and that people are in charge
  • Design and present an idea for a helpful AI

What you'll need

A grown-up nearby, a phone, tablet or computer with internet, and some paper and coloured pencils. A computer with a camera is best for lesson 3.

For parents and guardians

  • You create the account and pay with Mobile Money or card. Your child studies using your login, so we never collect your child's contact details.
  • Lessons are short, with activities away from the screen too. Younger children enjoy it most with a grown-up nearby.
  • Some lessons use free websites such as Teachable Machine, Scratch or Google Colab. We explain each one and when a grown-up should help.
  • When your child passes the final quiz, you type their name and it's printed on their certificate.
